Preparing Young Adults for Independence and Confidence

Transitioning into adulthood can feel overwhelming — especially for individuals with autism who may still be developing key life skills. At Thrive Autism, our Emerging Adult Skills Program is designed to bridge the gap between adolescence and adulthood, giving young adults the tools they need to succeed in daily life, relationships, and future careers.

What Are Emerging Adult Skills?

This program uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to teach practical, everyday skills that support greater independence. Depending on each individual’s needs, sessions may focus on:

  • Self-management – time management, organization, building routines
  • Self-care – hygiene, health, nutrition, exercise
  • Money management – budgeting, banking, paying bills
  • Cooking skills – meal planning, safe food preparation, healthy choices
  • Job readiness & vocational training – interviewing, workplace behavior, task completion

We also help young adults navigate the social side of adulthood, such as:

  • Roommate dynamics – sharing space and resolving conflicts
  • Transportation – public transit, ridesharing, or driving preparation
  • Shopping – planning, purchasing, and budgeting
  • Dating & adult friendships – understanding boundaries, communication, and healthy relationships

Why These Skills Matter

Developing independence is one of the most important milestones in adulthood. With the right support, young adults with autism can:

  • Build confidence in daily living
  • Increase independence from caregivers
  • Prepare for employment and higher education
  • Strengthen relationships with peers and partners
  • Reduce stress and anxiety about the future

ABA provides structured, evidence-based teaching methods to help young adults learn skills step by step, with plenty of opportunities to practice in real-world environments.

Where Training Takes Place

Our Emerging Adult Skills Program is flexible and can be delivered in:

  • Our clinics – for structured lessons and practice
  • In-home sessions – to develop skills in natural settings
  • Community environments – grocery stores, workplaces, gyms, or public transit

This ensures skills are not only learned but also applied where they matter most.

Help Your Young Adult Thrive in Independence

Adulthood brings new opportunities and challenges. With the right guidance, your child can build the skills they need to succeed, whether at home, in the workplace, or in relationships.

"Thrive has been a game changer in my son's life. We moved to Arizona a year ago and I was unsure of where to go for ABA. My son took the year off of ABA, but then I saw Thrive was opening. I quickly called and they got my son in quickly. We love their amazing staff members. They help my son work to become his best and he asks to go everyday. Thank you so much Thrive for being authentic and a fun environment for my child to become his best."
